A seminar on "Language and culture as business tools" was held on 27 March 2013 at Alliance Française Karachi under the joint sponsorship of Pakistan France Business and Alliance Française. The purpose of the seminar was to lay emphasis on the utility of learning French language and familiarizing oneself with French cultural values for optimizing the business opportunities with French partners. The seminar started with a general presentation by Mr. Hidayat Hussain, In-charge of Economic Service Department of PFBA, on the importance of French language in all spheres of international activity. He was followed by Mr. Henri Souffay, teacher at Alliance Francaise, who recounted his experience of working as commercial representative and interpreter for various Pakistani companies as well as companies in Indonesia and Malaysia. He gave some very useful tips to the Pakistani businessmen about the business culture, cultural practices and professional ethics in France. After Mr. Souffay, two PFBA member company representatives namely Aziztex and Mazars, gave very interesting accounts of how their knowledge of French helped them in enhancing their business with France. Mr. Lafir Aziz, Chief Executive of Aziztex, which is an apparel exporting company, testified from his personal experience about working with French clients and the boost he got in his business due to his familiarity with French language and culture. He called upon the local exporters to invest in learning a language like French because France is an important market for their products.
Mr. Jordan James Din, Business Development Officer at Mazars, a French business consultancy firm implanted in Pakistan, gave a detailed account of Mazars operations in Pakistan and in the region. He showed how his knowledge of French has been an asset to him in his professional activities and how his company has been able to extend its business due to his ability to deal with French-speaking clients.
Mr. Jamil Hamdani, President PFBA, in his presidential remarks, laid stress on increased collaboration between PFBA and Alliance Française so that the business community may fully take advantage of the language learning and other facilities offered by the Alliance Française.
The seminar ended with closing remarks from Jean-François Chenin, Director Alliance Française Karachi.
